The practice of Soil Stabilization has been with us for many years. However, the use of
sophisticated chemicals for this purpose is a more recent phenomenon. More recently the science
of developing man-made chemical mixtures designed specifically to reduce the natural
tendency of clay-based soils to expand and contract given the presence or absence
of moisture has reached new and unprecedented levels of success.
The addition
of these chemicals to the soil lessens the need for expensive removal and replacement
of subgrade and/or the costly “over design” of foundations to accommodate for such
conditions. Condor SS soil stabilizer is just such a product. Designed by Earth
Science Products, Corp. of Aurora, Oregon, Condor SS minimizes the tendency of
soils to expand through the presence of excess moisture by altering the chemical
properties of the soil by use of an Ion Exchange Resin (IER). It is differentiated
from other chemical stabilizers due to the use of water-soluble sulphonated oils.
These oils are very effective.
As soil electrolytes because of their high
chemical stability, great affinity to ringed structures and associated metal ions,
and also for their powerful ionizing capability.
When the ionization process
is complete, a more uniform soil mass is produced. Not only is the clay more
resistant to water, but bearing strength is increased. Clay formations that
are considered to be highly active when introduced to moisture can be treated
effectively utilizing this process.
Condor SS is an environmentally safe,
non-toxic chemical that will not harm people, pets or landscaping and can be used
either before construction of the slab or as a remedial method afterwards.
